There has always been great debate about Kobe beef, whether it is scam or it’s just as delicious as people say or if the price is worth it.
In order to find out the truth, I decided to go for a genuine Kobe beef in Kobe area during my trip to Kansai area (関西).
I got off at JR Sannomiya Station (JR三宮駅), the first place I stopped by was a teppanyaki restaurant named モーリヤ, which was recommended by a friend of mine who works as a tour guide.

Price of the course are quite expensive, but my friend and I decided that was the price we have to pay for genuine Kobe beef, so we still went in.
The reception wasn’t very friendly, but the waitress was very polite once we sat down so it kind of made up for it. Although she handed us 2 sets of menus and said the first set of menu is just regular beef, the second set of menu is the price for genuine Kobe beef, apparently the menu we saw outside is just regular beef and the price of Kobe beef is much more.
That’s when we decided to leave and search for another place, as the price of real Kobe beef is too much for what we were prepared to pay for and there was no point paying so much for regular beef since it’s not what this journey is about.
The most bizarre thing is, even though we were in Kobe area, most of the restaurants that we knocked door on don’t have genuine Kobe beef, and that’s a hidden information untold unless you ask them whether they serve real Kobe beef or not.
After taking some stroll around and search online for recommendations, we came by a place that actually serves genuine Kobe beef called “Ishida” just 5 minutes before their last call, and seems like most of the legit Kobe beef are served teppanyaki style.

Salmon is commonly seen which is still nicely done, though the squid is quite unique, texture is squishy but easy to chew on, personally I loved it, but might not be the right taste for people not used to squishy seafood.
and here comes the main character, Kobe beef!
Just look at the distribution of the fat on that meat…. oh man I’m getting hungry again.
Chef recommended just adding rock salt for the meat, so that the taste of spices doesn’t interfere with the meat taste.
It was indeed a very unique gourmet food experience.
Kobe beef is a whole different kind of product which distinguishes it from regular beef, once the meat enters your mouth, it’s almost as if it just melted inside. The texture is so rich that it tastes more like fish rather than red meat.
As conclusion, I wouldn’t say it is “better” than other higher-quality beef, but I’d categorize it as “one of a kind” unique meat, and regardless of my passion for red meat taste, it is still very delicious even with similarity to white meat, and it’s truly a very special experience to have it.
In the end, the whole course comes down to 6,980yen (Japanese yen), which is still quite expensive, but I think it’s totally worth it to have this unique meat for at least once in your lifetime.
